HISTORIC & RARE 1920s PINE VALLEY HICKORY SHAFTED CLUB WITH THEIR FIRST PROFESSIONAL STAMP
This is one of two clubs within the Golffice Museum collection that helps tell the early history of Pine Valley Golf Club. This club was sold out of Pine Valley’s pro shop by James Govan, Pine Valley’s first professional.
Govan lived a remarkable life. He was born in St Andrews and for a time he worked for Robert Forgan, who was widely considered the greatest clubmaker of his time.
In 1913 George Crump hired Govan to be the construction foreman for his new course - Pine Valley and two years later Jamea Govan was named as its first golf professional, a position that he held until 1942 when he retired due to illness. He passed away a year later.
This is a 1920’s Tom Stewart of St Andrews made Mashie Niblick. Tom Stewart is widely considered to be the greatest ironmaker of his era. Stewart made golf clubs for all the great players and all of the great clubs.
